This five-class course is designed for anyone with a grasp of fundamental WordPress concepts and techniques – including any graduates of our training course, Creating Websites  in WordPress: A First Course in WordPress – who want to take full command and control of their WordPress Web site and get the maximum benefit out of it.

Course Overview

Here’s what you’ll learn in this course:

  • The best way to manage and secure a privately-hosted WordPress site:

Options for initially setting up your site;

“Hardening” WordPress security to prevent site hacking/hijacking/spamming;

Upgrading safely to the latest versions of the WordPress core software, themes and plugins;

Best practices for backing up, restoring and migrating your site;

Creating a standalone test environment for your site on your laptop/desktop; and,

Improving the performance of your site.

  • How to bring more traffic to your site:

Basic concepts of Search Engine Optimization;

Seeing who is visiting your site and how they are using it;

Simplified SEO tools and techniques for WordPress; and,

Setting goals and tracking progress.

  • How to extend, enhance and refine the design of your site:

Finding and installing plugins to provide additional functions/features;

Some “best-in-class” plugins you should be using/considering;

Finding themes and theme frameworks with advanced features that provide more control/flexibility over page layouts, general appearance, handing of media, etc;

Safely switching between themes;

Further refining the site appearance using custom CSS code, child themes and custom posts.

    Prerequisites

    Prospective students need to have some basic training and/or experience in using WordPress.  They also need to have administration access to a WordPress site that is privately hosted, i.e., not a site hosted on WordPress.com.  If you do not yet have a privately hosted website, please contact the instructor to discuss options for how to do that.

    Equipment Requirements

    None. Students will use workstations in the computer labs to access their websites and perform the in-class exercises.
